Drain Fly - Sewer like Bad Odour in Washroom, Breakout at a Workplace

Being a nasty, bothersome little bug that is generally visible around and near to drains of a Kitchen, Breakout Area and washrooms at a workplace, hotel, hospital etc. Yes!! We are talking about Drain flies!!

Before we see how to check on Drain Flies growing infestation, we must know what causes them?

Drain flies loves stagnant water that contains decaying organic material, which is often found in the drains and pipes of sinks, showers, kitchen and bathtubs. The moisture and organic material provide ideal conditions for drains flies to live and breed further.

Seeing drain flies in and around drains is not pleasant and can be downright embarrassing. However, it’s not too difficult to remove their source of and eliminate the problem but need to go about it the right way.

What Are Drain Flies?

Drain flies are also known as moth flies, sink flies, or sewer flies. They are joined by fruit flies, fungus gnats.

Why Do Drain Flies Live in Drains?

Drain flies need plenty of moisture to survive. They can often find this moisture in bathrooms, kitchens, and standing water.

These places also have plenty of nourishment for drain flies, whose diet consists of rotting organic material such as old food, human or animal feces, and grime.

This is why sewers, drains traps, and other plumbing situations are popular places for drain flies to live and breed.

You can also find drain flies in outdoor areas that have large amounts of organic waste, like leaky septic tanks and damp areas with animal feces that haven’t been cleaned up.

The Boi-film of stagnant water that collects on the sides of pipes and underneath drains makes a great place for drain flies to lay their eggs.

One might notice more drain flies than normal in bathrooms and sinks that have not been used recently.

This is because stagnant water mixed with decaying organic material develops a film on top. When the water is moved or flushed out, this film disappears.

How to Prevent Drain Flies

With the accelerated rate of drain fly reproduction comes a problem: when you see an adult drain fly, there is more than likely already a huge amount of larvae lurking within your pipes.

This makes prevention very important.

Flush Out Pipes Frequently

As mentioned above, drain flies make their homes and have their offspring in stagnant water.

Simply running the water in a sink, shower, or bathtub will get the water in the drainpipes and traps moving, making it less attractive to the drain flies.

This will not kill any existing larvae and will not even flush them all out, but it will help prevent adults from breeding.

Clean Washrooms and Kitchen

By disinfecting these rooms, we will remove the sources of food for drain flies.

The more organic matter that is allowed to decay out in the open, the more drain flies (and other bugs) you’ll attract.

Unclog Drains

When showers, sinks, and bathtubs cannot drain properly, they attract drain flies. Hence a drain cleaning service is very important to unclog the drain and further removal of larva by using hydro jetting the reachable drain traps/ hydro jetting the drain with botanical heavy-duty cleaning solutions to remove the source of larva - The organic deposits/ slimy biofilm on the sides of drainpipe.

Install Non-Returnable-Valve (NRV)

In modern building construction the drain traps like P trap and S trap are being compromised either in installation due to lack of space or a poor plumbing design can bother the sewer gas to come up directly from the vertical drain line. The purpose of a drain trap is to have water filled in so that any sewer gas or pest does not come up, hence in case of such challenge of poor plumbing design or lack of a proper trap, installation of a NRV confirms that the sewer gas or pest like drain fly  does not come up and create nuisance.
